Travel Information about the Northern Catskills

The Village of Tannersville, incorporated in 1895, began with tanneries and sawmills in the early 19th century. Later, an active village grew up around the Hunter Turnpike resulting in the building of hotels and boarding houses. The area was once the premier vacation site in the country. To accommodate the thriving community, department and general stores and trades people of all kinds established themselves here. The Mountains National Bank, where the Post Office is now located, played an important part in Tannersville's growth. A safe from the bank, now an antique, is a conversation piece at the Post Office. As times changed, the need for recreational activities brought about the dredging and development of the Rip Van Winkle/Tannersville Lake for swimming, boating and fishing. Also built was a small sand beach, a pavilion, playground and recently, a hockey rink. In the 1930s Colonial Country Club, a 9-hole golf course, open to the public, was constructed on Main St., still a center of activity. Where department stores and hotels once dominated, one now finds many fine restaurants, specialty stores, a fire company, The Mountain Top Arboretum, a middle school and high school, two churches and a synagogue. In 1998 a Bike Path, which runs approximately 2 miles in length from Bloomer Rd. near William's Lumber to Clum Hill Rd. at Cortina Valley was completed for cyclists, walkers and runners. One plan in the Millennium is to extend the Bike Path to Hunter Mountain and also to North Lake. Additionally, the volunteer Beautification Committee will continue to make improvements to the look of the Route 23A/Main Street corridor.
